Ashwin could not dismiss Murali in a 'forgotten' Bangladesh series
He took 11 wickets. Run 114. Ravichandran Ashwin became the best of the series by giving such a performance in the two-Test series against Bangladesh. Ashwin has won the series best award 11 times in his Test career, which is jointly the highest.
Legend Muttiah Muralitharan has won equal 11 times. But not 11 times, Ashwin was supposed to surpass Murali with the series best award against Bangladesh. The Indian Express claims that the authorities did not make a mistake.
What is wrong? To find the answer to this question, we have to go back to the West Indies series last year. India played a 2-match Test series against the West Indies in July last year. Ashwin took 15 wickets in the 1-0 series, scoring 56 runs in an innings.Ravindra Jadeja had the second highest wicket in that series—just 7. That shows Ashwin's power in that series. Naturally, Ashwin could have been the best of the series.
But the strange thing is that the series best award was not given at the award ceremony at the end of the series. Indian media Indian Express contacted the West Indies Cricket Board to find out about this. They said an Indian company was in charge of sponsoring the series.
Then Indian Express contacted that company. But they instead pushed the ball into the West Indies Cricket Board's court. The agency said they only looked at the economic aspects of the series, not under the category of the Series Sera award. West Indies Cricket Board was responsible for giving this award.
Why Man of the Series award was not given in that series is not really clear. If they had forgotten, it was expected to be given to the Indian team later. But that was not done. Ashwin though will get a chance to overtake Murali in the future. The 3-match Test series against New Zealand will start from October 16. This could also be Ashwin's series.
